The vice-president of India has stated that his country is interested in boosting its levels of investment in Zambia's education sector.

Speaking as he conducts an official visit to the African nation, Shri Hamid Ansari signed a new $5 million (£3.1 million) grant aimed at further enhancing Zambia's schools and institutions of higher education.

It is anticipated that this money will go towards training more Zambian professionals across a variety of business sectors, as well as in the fields of health and agriculture.

At the same time, Mr Ansari took the opportunity of a meeting with his Zambian counterpart, George Kunda, to lay out his vision for future relations between the two countries.

"We want to re-energise our relations. We need to share experiences," he was quoted by the Zambian Daily Mail as stating.

"We are ready to respond to your requirements according to our capabilities.”

Meanwhile, work is set to begin on a major new $1.5 billion power plant in Zambia, which is expected to boost the country's energy generation capacity by arund 600 megawatts when it is completed in 2017.
