Ghanaians with mental health conditions 'need more support'

29/01/2010

The chief psychiatrist of the Ghana Health Service has called upon the government to hurry through the country's Mental Health Bill, stating that people suffering from such conditions need to know that they have support.

Dr Akwasi Osei told an audience at an event organised by the Ghana Federation of the Disabled that people with mental health conditions in the country face tough challenges, Peace FM Online reported.

"Persons with disabilities in Ghana face a lot of challenges in their daily lives in the areas of societal attitudes on them, discrimination, education, employment, health and others", Mr Osei is quoted as commenting.

He added that by speeding up the introduction of the bill, rights groups working within the African nation will also receive extra support in their efforts for equality.

In November, Ghana's deputy minister of local government and rural development Elvis Afriyie Ankrah claimed that the country needs to address the lack of toilet facilities available for disabled people, reported AllAfrica.com.
