India's disabled 'being assisted by volunteers'

11/02/2010

Dale Dykema and Cathy Morgan, individuals from the US, have spoken of their travels to India to donate personal energy transportation vehicles (PETs) to disabled children.

The devices are operated by a hand-crank and allow individuals to travel across rough terrain and otherwise unmanageable surfaces, the Holland sentinel reported.

Volunteers help to put them together before they are shipped to the Asian nation.

Mr Dykema and Ms Morgan journeyed to the nation last month to donate hand-cranked vehicles to adults and children through a US-based organisation.

In particular, they told the news provider, an eight-year-old boy unable to use one arm and one leg showed promise and enthusiasm.

"This vehicle will not only change his life, but his parents' lives, his siblings, his friends," Mr Dykema stated.

Last month, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan called for more recognition of the plight of disabled people in the nation, the Times of India reported.
