The volunteer journey

Laurie Wein (Solomon Islands - Secure livelihoods)

We're looking for experienced and motivated people with an interest in volunteering abroad.

You’ll work directly with our partners in developing countries. And we'll work with you during all the steps on your journey as a volunteer abroad – and as a global citizen at home.

Step 1

Review our list of skills in high demand or review a list of urgently needed placements we're looking to fill. You can apply online and our volunteer advisors will assess the current demand for your skills.

Our volunteers come from across Canada and the United States. And they come from all age ranges, from young professionals to retired specialists.

The majority of our placements are two years in length, though select short-term placements are available for those with specialized skills or a great deal of experience. Almost all volunteer placements require an academic qualification plus two to three years of experience in that field.

Step 2

If you are selected as an overseas volunteer, we will help you throughout your entire volunteer journey with a comprehensive training and support package.

We recognize the important commitment volunteers make in choosing to volunteer overseas. Our in-house training program is designed to help volunteers identify and meet their learning needs before leaving for their placement – and while overseas.

All CUSO-VSO volunteers are matched with a volunteer advisor, their main point of contact with the organization before their overseas placement. Volunteer advisors work with volunteers as they prepare for overseas placements.

The advisors also work with international staff to help identify suitable placements for these volunteers. While you’ll interact with other CUSO-VSO staff to plan your training and travel arrangements, your volunteer advisor is your main contact who can help you navigate processes and answer questions as you prepare to head overseas.

As a CUSO-VSO volunteer, you will be offered:

Step 3

While overseas, your local VSO office will organize further training and support you when on placement.
Your most regular contact will be with your employer – CUSO-VSO's local partner organization. However, your local VSO office will help you with any major personal, medical or security problems.

In addition to formal courses and workshops, CUSO-VSO will help you access a number of online tools to help you make your placement more effective.

Step 4

After completing your posting, we offer different ways to support returned volunteers in reintegrating to life in North America.

We can also support you in continuing to be involved in international development. Learn more about our public engagement program and the ongoing activities happening near you.
